Homemade Pancake Syrup – How to Make Maple Syrup

Have you ever looked at the ingredients in maple flavored syrup?  They’re kinda scary and don’t pass the 75% rule (if you can’t pronounce 75% of the ingredients, you don’t wanna eat it).  But more importantly, maple flavor syrup is expensive! The kids love pancakes, which are pretty frugal, but they go through WAY too much syrup.

So I decided to make my own homemade maple syrup, and I’m going to show you how to make maple syrup! Simple follow the step-by-step video below.

You’ll need sugar, water, and mapleine, which is an imitation maple flavor that you can buy in the extract section of the baking aisle.  This recipe that I show you in the video is taken right from the bottle.  It’s simple, and surprisingly good!

Simply boil the water and dissolve the sugar.  Once that is done, add your mapleine flavor.  We like to serve ours hot over pancakes, but you can cool it in the fridge first if you prefer cold pancake syrup.

One thing: make sure you wait until the syrup is completely cooled before you try to put it into a recycled syrup bottle.  I was rushing things trying to get this video recorded, and stupidly didn’t wait.  What you don’t see in the video is me dashing off quickly with the syrup bottle and throwing the whole batch down the drain! The bottle melted very quickly!

While this doesn’t taste as good as actual maple syrup, you know, the real stuff, not the flavored stuff in squeeze bottles, it is affordable, and is SO much better tasting than the flavored syrup most of us are used to!
