How to Make Homemade Microwave Popcorn

Have you ever had one of those “ah-ha!” moments?  Mine came this week when I discovered how to make homemade microwaved popcorn.

Make Homemade Microwave Popcorn

Let me preface this by saying that I absolutely HATE microwaved popcorn.  Whatever chemicals they put into those bags that reacts in the microwave with the kernels is nauseating to me.  My younger sister loves microwave popcorn, and when I was a kid, I was totally convinced that she only loved it because I hated it so much.  I would seriously have to leave the house whenever anyone cooked it!

Flash forward to modern times.  I rarely buy the stuff.  My kids like to have it on hand during movies, and they usually make it when Mom and Dad go out for a date night.  Last week, they made – and burned- a bag when I was home.  I was NOT happy.  The only thing worse than the smell of processed microwave popcorn is BURNED microwaved popcorn!

Now, we live in an RV, so space is at a premium.  I have tossed around the idea of buying a popcorn popper before, but we just don’t have room to store it, and I can’t see spending the money on yet another one-hit-wonder appliance.  So I searched for a solution.

I had heard of others microwaving their own popcorn, at substantial savings.  So I gave it a try:

I was SHOCKED not only from how simple and inexpensive the ingredients were, but also how easy it was to make! It tastes wonderful, and best of all – it smells like popcorn, not chemicals!  I encourage you to give it a try yourself.

Here’s a recap from the video in case you can’t play it right now.  You’ll need:

  • ¼ cup popcorn kernels
  • A paper lunch bag

Put the kernels in the bag. Fold the bag over about a half inch twice. Put the bag in the microwave, folded side down. Pop on popcorn setting. Enjoy!
